Meet Our SLiNGers: Khor Kar, Senior Manager (Digital & LEAN)
Meet Our SLiNGers is a series featuring the faces behind everything at SLNG.
In today’s fast-paced business landscape, working with efficiency is key. Meet Khor Kar from our IT & Procurement team (also known as our “efficiency guru”), who oversees digital and LEAN projects that aim to streamline processes and eliminate waste at SLNG.
Q: Tell us about your role. What does a LEAN specialist do?
I’m like an “efficiency guru”. My job is to help teams make things run smoother, faster, and with less hassle. I work closely with teams to help them understand LEAN methodology and apply them. Think of me as the Marie Kondo of operations – if it doesn’t spark efficiency, it’s out.
Q: Describe your typical work day.
My day starts with a strong cup of coffee and a quick look at our plans for LEAN training, project performance and progress. Then I put on my detective hat and dig into processes with different teams to determine what we can improve. By afternoon, I’m in full problem solving-mode, either running improvement projects or helping others experience the magic of LEAN. And of course there are always some emails and paperwork to deal with.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love seeing the “Aha!” moment when a messy process suddenly clicks into place. Let’s be honest - it’s pretty satisfying to see things running like a well-oiled machine after we’ve performed our LEAN magic.
Plus, I get to work with awesome people in SLNG, and there’s always something new to learn.
Q: Could you share a memorable experience from your time at SLNG?
One of my proudest moments was when we gave out LEAN Awards to the teams that contributed to our LEAN projects in FY23. I have always felt that it’s crucial for the LEAN leadership to recognise contributions and reward employees for their efforts and growth.
Q: Any tips you can share to cultivate a LEAN mindset?
Here are my two cents:
- Focus on Value: If something doesn’t add value, consider tossing it out like expired food.
- Empower Your Colleagues: Let everyone be part of the solution - the more minds, the merrier.
- Be Patient: LEAN isn’t an overnight makeover - it’s a slow and steady journey, but it’s totally worth it.
